October 20 Devotional: The Wisdom to Wait

Scripture

Proverbs 19:2  “Desire without knowledge is not good—how much more will hasty feet miss the way!”

Vineyard Lesson

Reading the Vines Before Reaching for the Shears

A wise vineyard worker does not rush down the rows cutting at the first sign of disorder. Before pruning, tying, watering, or harvesting, the worker pauses to read the vineyard: the color of the leaves, the firmness of the fruit, the moisture of the soil, the direction of the wind, and the forecast gathering beyond the hills.

That pause is not inactivity. It is attentive preparation. One hurried cut can remove fruitful growth, while one prayerfully timed action can strengthen the vine for seasons to come. Wisdom observes before it acts and lets understanding guide desire. In God’s vineyard, patience protects what haste might damage. The faithful worker trusts that the Vinetender sees the whole field and knows not only what must be done, but when it will bear the best fruit.

Devotional

Yesterday’s counsel along the rows reminded us that plans become steadier when they are tested in wise community. Today, Proverbs 19:2 takes that lesson one step further: even a good desire can lose its way when it outruns knowledge. Counsel helps us see; patience gives us time to respond well to what we have seen.

Some will choose to plant and tend vines out of a romantic notion of lifestyle. They do not understand the responsibility of stewardship and the knowledge that is required. Scripture warns that eager feet can miss the path when the heart moves faster than discernment.

Likewise, some decisions require more than strong desire. They require knowledge of the season, honest awareness of our motives, and a willingness to notice what God is revealing. Patient discernment asks, “What is true here?” before asking, “What do I want to do?”Waiting gives us time to observe the vineyard. Which relationships are healthy? Where is fruit beginning to form? What keeps repeating? What doors remain closed, and which ones are opening without force? These observations are not substitutes for faith; they are often part of God’s guidance.

Key Takeaway

Wisdom does not let desire set the pace; it prays, observes, and moves in step with God’s timing.
