October 19 Devotional: Counsel Along the Rows – Wisdom in the Vineyard

Scripture

Proverbs 15:22  “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.”

Vineyard Lesson

Wise Cultivation Is Shared Work

No fruitful vineyard is tended by one person alone. The keeper may know every row, and have a plan to achieve desired results. But there are many ways to accomplish a goal. Pride makes people think they do not need help.

Hearing different viewpoints does not diminish the vinedresser’s skill; it shows that the harvest matters more than personal pride. A wise steward welcomes careful questions, receives correction, and lets experienced eyes help discern what each vine needs.God often protects and directs us in the same way. He places Scripture-rooted believers beside us so their prayerful insight can become part of His gracious cultivation in our lives.

Devotional

Important decisions can make us feel that we must appear certain. We may fear that asking for help exposes weakness or slows our progress. Proverbs teaches the opposite: plans become fragile when guarded from counsel, while wise advisers help them stand.

Humility begins by admitting that our perspective is limited. We can see one row clearly and still miss what is happening beyond the next trellis. God alone sees the whole vineyard—its soil, seasons, storms, and future fruit.

Seeking godly counsel is not collecting opinions until someone agrees with us. It is inviting mature believers to speak honestly, even when their words challenge our preferred plan. A trustworthy adviser loves Christ, handles Scripture faithfully, prays carefully, and values obedience above approval. Not every confident voice is a wise voice. Advice must be tested against God’s character and commands in Scripture. The Holy Spirit will never lead contrary to the Word He inspired. Counsel that excuses sin, feeds vanity, or makes convenience supreme must not direct our steps.

Key Takeaway

Wisdom ripens when humble hearts seek godly counsel, listen well, and test every plan by Scripture.
