October 9 Devotional: The Beginning of Wisdom

Scripture

Proverbs 9:10  “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”

Vineyard Lesson

Wisdom Begins with Reverence

A wise Vinetender does not treat the vineyard casually. He approaches each row with respect for the season, the soil, the weather, and the life entrusted to his care. He knows that careless confidence can damage what patient attention would protect. In the same way, true wisdom begins when the heart stands rightly before God—with reverence, humility, and a willingness to learn from the One who sees the whole vineyard.

Devotional

Proverbs 9:10 teaches that wisdom does not begin with information, experience, or opinion. It begins with the fear of the Lord. This fear is not terror that drives us away from God. It is reverent awe that draws us near with humility, worship, obedience, and trust.

A Vinetender learns from seasons of drought, abundance, disease pressure, pruning, ripening, and harvest. Yet even experience must be held with humility. Conditions change. Vines respond differently. A wise steward remains teachable because the vineyard is alive and every season requires attention.

Our spiritual lives require the same posture. We can gather knowledge, make plans, and rely on past success, but if our hearts do not begin with reverence for God, our wisdom becomes shallow. We may become confident in our own understanding while missing the gentle correction, deeper discernment, or patient timing the Lord is offering.

The fear of the Lord places God at the center of every decision. It asks, “What honors Him here?” before asking, “What benefits me?” It listens before speaking, prays before acting, and remembers that obedience is wiser than appearance. Wisdom recognizes the Holy One.Today, let wisdom begin again in worship. Bring God the decision, conversation, opportunity, or concern before you. Ask not only for an answer, but for a heart that reveres Him. The Vinetender’s wisdom grows in those who remain teachable before the Lord.

Key Takeaway

Wisdom begins when the heart stands before God with reverence, humility, and a willingness to be taught by the Holy One.
