Proverbs 12:15 — “The way of fools seems right to them, but the wise listen to advice.”
Vineyard Lesson
Wise Vines Receive Training
A vine left entirely to itself will not always grow in the direction that best supports fruitfulness. The Vinetender trains shoots along the trellis, redirects growth, and gently positions the vine where light, air, and strength can be used well. A fruitful vineyard depends not only on the life within the vine, but also on the vine’s responsiveness to careful training.
Devotional
Wisdom requires a teachable heart. Proverbs 12:15 contrasts two postures: the fool is convinced his own way is always right, while the wise person listens to advice. The difference is not intelligence. It is humility.
In the vineyard, training is not punishment. When the Vinetender ties a shoot to the trellis or redirects new growth, he is not restricting the vine out of frustration. He is guiding it toward the sun (Son) – health, balance, and fruitfulness. Untrained growth may look impressive for a moment, but it can become tangled, shaded, vulnerable, or unfruitful.
Our lives can grow the same way when we resist correction. We may mistake independence for maturity and assume that because something feels right, it must be wise. Yet Scripture reminds us that our perspective is limited. We need God’s Word, the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and the faithful counsel of wise people who help us see what we might miss on our own.
Listening to advice does not mean accepting every opinion. Wisdom discerns the difference between noise and godly counsel. It weighs advice against Scripture, considers the character of the person speaking, and remains humble enough to ask, “Lord, are You using this to train me?”
A teachable heart is not weak. It is strong enough to receive correction without defensiveness, humble enough to ask questions, and secure enough in God’s love to change direction. The Vinetender’s guidance may come through a sermon, a Scripture passage, a trusted friend, a difficult consequence, or a quiet conviction that will not leave your spirit.Today, pay attention to the places where you are quick to defend yourself. The Lord may be inviting you to listen more carefully. Wise vines receive training because they trust the hands that guide them.
Key Takeaway
Wisdom grows in the heart that stays teachable, listens with humility, and trusts the Vinetender’s training toward greater fruitfulness.
