Scripture

Proverbs 28:1  “The wicked flee though no one pursues, but the righteous are as bold as a lion.”

Vineyard Lesson

Healthy Roots Give Courage Above Ground

A vine may appear delicate above the soil, but its strength is secured below the surface. Deep, healthy roots anchor the plant through wind, heat, and changing weather. The vine does not stand because conditions are easy. It stands because it is firmly established.Spiritual courage also grows from what holds us beneath the surface.

Devotional

Proverbs 28:1 contrasts two ways of living. One is restless and fearful, fleeing even when no one is pursuing. The other is steady and courageous—bold as a lion.

This boldness is not loudness, aggression, or self-confidence. It is the settled courage that comes from a clear conscience and a life aligned with God.

Fear often grows where something is hidden. When we avoid truth, justify compromise, or carry unconfessed sin, ordinary pressures can feel threatening. We become defensive, anxious, and eager to escape attention. Even when no one is pursuing us, guilt can make us run.

Righteousness produces a different posture. Not because righteous people never fail, but because they live honestly before God. They confess quickly, receive mercy, and return to the path of obedience. Their courage rests not in personal perfection but in the faithfulness of the One who makes them right.

A vineyard reveals this distinction after a storm. Shallow-rooted growth may lean or break, while a deeply established vine remains anchored. Wind reveals the roots.

The pressures of life often do the same. A difficult conversation, an ethical decision, an uncertain future, or an opportunity to speak truth can reveal where our confidence is rooted. If our security depends on approval, comfort, or control, courage may disappear when those things are threatened. But when our roots reach into Christ, we can stand without pretending the wind is not strong.

Biblical boldness does not mean we never feel afraid. It means fear does not have the final authority over our obedience.

The righteous are bold because they know whose vineyard they stand in. The Vinetender sees every row, protects what belongs to Him, and gives wisdom for each faithful step. We do not have to manufacture confidence by denying our weakness. We can bring our weakness to God and receive strength from Him.

If your courage has weakened, examine the roots. Is there something to confess? A truth to remember? A promise to trust? A step of obedience you have postponed?Today, let the Vinetender strengthen what lies beneath the surface. Receive His forgiveness, stand in His truth, and take the next faithful step. You may still feel the wind, but you do not have to flee.

Key Takeaway

Righteous boldness grows from a clear heart, deep roots in Christ, and confidence in the faithful care of the Vinetender.
